Instagram Reels: What to Do If It Feels Like You've Been Left Behind

If I had to pick one sentence about social media that has resonated with me the most over the past few months, I would have to go with this one:

“We’re no longer a photo sharing app, or a square photo sharing app.” — Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram (June 2021)

If you’re contemplating your business’ social strategy for 2022, it isn’t a sentence you should focus on, but a word. And that word is video.

Let me break it down for you…

Your business’ presence on Instagram is now essential. According to one study, consumers list Instagram as the #1 place to stay up-to-date on their favorite brands. (Instagram Trends Research Study.) In fact, simply HAVING an Instagram account means people will view your brand as more creative than others that do not have a presence on the platform. This is known as a “halo effect.”

Video is the key to driving discovery. You can thank Gen Z’s ever-increasing interest in video for Instagram’s push to give it preference in Stories, feeds, live broadcasts, and Reels. When surveyed, 91% of active Instagram respondents reported watching videos on Instagram weekly. (Instagram Trends Research Study.) According to the head of Instagram, the #1 thing people want most when using the platform is to be entertained, and video is extremely effective in helping Instagram satisfy this desire.

There are many forms of video across social media, but Reels feels different. This summer marks two years since Instagram rolled out its catchy, short-form video feature as an answer to Tik Tok. Just today, Meta expanded Reels globally. (Facebook’s usual move when a test works out.)

"Reels is already our fastest growing content format by far, and today we're making it available to everyone on Facebook globally," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg

It’s not too late to start creating Reels for your business. Don’t worry, you have NOT been left behind! Sure, other creators and businesses may already have shortcuts for editing, a knack for matching the best audio, and insights into the best ways to engage their followers, but the process has also become a lot more user friendly in the meantime. You don’t have to be a celebrity creator with 1 million followers to succeed. Starting small will still give your business a significant boost.

A few tips…

  • Start watching Reels! Some of the best content is simply mimicking Reels that have already gone viral. Taking time every day to observe Reels will automatically give you ideas for your own brand.

  • Consider your most eye-catching products or imagery and starting collecting videos of these. Use vertical formatting (9:16). If you’re in the service industry, consider taking videos of completed jobs, behind-the-scenes action, or anything you think may help tell your brand’s story.

  • Take baby steps and learn by doing. Your first Reel is not going to be your best, and that’s OK. Simply choose a video, add fun music, and experiment with effects. Are you hoping to raise awareness for a new product? Showcase your team’s hard work? Answer a FAQ? Have a goal and keep it in mind.

  • Be as thorough as possible when publishing. Be sure to tag people and products, add a handful of key hashtags, and ensure your thumbnail image is how you want it to appear in the feed. Once your Reel is published, leave it be! Resist the urge to make edits and these have been known to limit reach under the algorithm.

  • Revisit your Reel in a couple of days and take note of how many people you reached and how many engagements you received. It’s very rewarding to see the difference between static feed posts. Enjoy your new followers as well!

  • Set a goal to regularly share Reels. You’ll become more confident with each Reel you share, I promise.

The bottom line? Social media products and tactics are always changing, and it can be easy to feel like you’ve been left behind or it’s too late to learn. Just remember that all other businesses are in your shoes. Everyone starts somewhere. I hope this inspires you to give Reels a try!

Keeping Up With the ‘Gram: What’s New?

Social media platforms are constantly evolving, and Instagram has been quite the busy bee this fall. Between prepping for the holiday season, staying up-to-date with current events, and accomplishing everyday tasks, it can be a challenge to keep up with the changes. Here’s a quick catch-up for you!

Let’s chat about some of Instagram’s new features…

Insta has a new look!

When you open up the app, you’ll notice the camera and activity/notifications tabs are now next to the Instagram Direct icon on the top right of your homepage. That prime bottom center real estate now belongs to the Reels and Shop tabs. (I lost count of how many times I have instinctively tapped the shop tab looking for my notifications, but here we are.)

So, why fix what wasn’t broken? Over the past year, Instagram has noticed the viral spread of short, entertaining videos and an increase in demand for easy, on-platform shopping. The purpose of Instagram’s updated look is to keep up with changing user behavior while improving the overall user experience.

Now, you might wonder: what are Reels? Reels (also somewhat new to the platform) replicate the Tik-Tok experience — they’re short, 15-30 second videos primarily used for entertainment. Reels tend to be more choreographed and less timely than stories. They can be a great tool for businesses that have a little extra time and creativity and want to promote products and share valuable information in a new, engaging way. My advice?

DO: Start small, keep it simple, have FUN, and grow from there. Also, just be yourself!

DON’T: Worry if you are overwhelmed or don’t have time to dabble in Reels right now. It’s perfectly OK to focus on strategies that are bringing in conversions and make small goals to help your content evolve with these shiny, new things.

As for the Shop tab, it’s now in a more easily accessible location and allows users to support their favorite brands, find personalized recommendations, discover discounts, shop collections, and more. (If you have a product catalog, here’s your reminder to spend some time in Commerce Manager ensuring your shop is properly optimized.)

Product tags are now available for Instagram ads built in ads manager!

Ads with product tags take users straight to a related product page where they can learn more and get a direct link to your website. You can now use this feature when building your ad from scratch using Ads Manager as opposed to just doing it the old way and promoting organic posts that use the product tag.

A Korean skincare brand that has been testing this feature for the past year saw a 45% decrease in cost per purchase and a 42% reduction in cost per add to cart (source)!

A promising new custom audience!

On top of product tags for ads, Instagram also introduced a new audience tool: Shopping Engagement Custom Audiences. This allows businesses to target users that have previously shown interest in their products, such as saving a product, visiting a shop, or initiating a purchase, according to Search Engine Land. Can’t wait to test this one.

Instagram users’ search ability is getting a boost!

In 6 countries (including here in the U.S.), users will now be able to search the platform using keywords. Previously, users were only able to search the platform using hashtags, location, or by directly typing in an account name. Now, instead of searching #holidayoutfits, a user could search “holiday outfits” and all posts that fit the description should appear, even if the hashtag is missing. This being said, it’s important to note that only certain terms are searchable. It will be interesting to see how this feature evolves but for the time being, it’s an added resource for users to find more content that is relevant to them.

Instagram creators can go Live for longer!

Creators can now share video in real-time for up to 4 hours and have up to 30 days to save the recording. Instagram is also planning on adding a “Live Now” section in the IGTV app and on Explore to make Lives more discoverable.

The wild part? These are only SOME of the recent changes! Which of these (or other) updates are you most excited about?
